Your first one-on-one physical therapy visit: what to expect

You do not need to know the name of your injury before starting physical therapy. A more useful starting point is what has changed: what hurts, what feels difficult, and what you want to get back to doing.

At LUX Concierge Physical Therapy in Lakeview East, your appointment is dedicated to you. No double booking means space to explain your concerns and ask questions.

Start with the story

Think about when the problem began and whether it followed an injury, a change in activity, or no clear event. Describe the pattern rather than trying to diagnose it yourself.

“I can walk comfortably, but stairs hurt” is useful information. So is “I stopped lifting because I do not know what is safe.” The details help make the conversation specific to your life.

What happens during an evaluation?

A physical therapist reviews your history and examines relevant movement and function. The assessment and your goals help shape a proposed care plan. Ask which findings matter and how they connect to your symptoms or limitations. APTA: preparing for your visit

Your evaluation is also a chance to decide whether the plan makes sense to you. You should have room to raise concerns about a treatment, exercise, or schedule.

What should you bring?

Bring a current medication list, relevant medical records, and any instructions from a referring clinician or surgeon. Wear clothing that allows comfortable movement and access to the area being assessed. Write down your main questions beforehand. APTA: preparing for your visit

You can also make a short note about the goal you most want help with. It does not need to sound clinical. “Walk my dog comfortably” or “return to my usual workout” gives the conversation a direction.

Four questions worth asking

  1. What did you find, and what remains uncertain?
  2. What is the first goal we are working toward?
  3. What should I do between appointments?
  4. How will we decide whether the plan needs to change?

You do not need to remember everything at once. Ask for clarification when a recommendation is unclear or seems difficult to fit into your routine.

Clarify the practical details

Before attending, confirm appointment arrangements and how payment or insurance applies to your care. Coverage and referral requirements can vary by plan. APTA: choosing a physical therapist

Avoid assuming that a service is covered because it appears on a clinic’s website. LUX can discuss its current arrangements so you know what to verify.
